Reading 101

During my time as social media director of University of Reading’s K-pop society (RUKPOPS), I was involved in designing and producing materials for Reading 101, a dance and singing competition held by RUKPOPS.

The deliverables for this event included:

  • creating rulebooks for both the judges and the participants

  • booklets to distribute to the audience

  • template for instagram posts

  • t-shirts for participants

  • sticker labels for pariticipants

  • entrance banner

About Reading 101

Reading 101 was based off of ‘Produce 101’, a large scale south Korean reality girl group survival show project, in which the public "produces" a unit girl group by choosing members from a pool of 101 trainees from 46 entertainment companies (taken from kpop wiki).

Based off this concept, Reading 101 collaborated with 9 universities to hold the competition. Along with the dance category, a vocal category was added to allow more variety to the event. A part of the money raised during the event was donated to the Anthony Nolan Charity, with the help of the Reading Marrow Society.

Booklet design

The branding colours for this event was gold and black. This was reflected in the information booklet designed for the audience and throughout all the deliverables. The booklet included information about the judges, the sponsors and the universities participating in the competition, with additional information for audience for navigation throughout the entire day.

The overall design was kept minimal for easy and clear navigation for the users. This was done so by keeping wide margins at the top and bottom and having strctured line spacing throughout the text. Using different typesizes and weights to distinguish between headings and body text also allowed to keep the minimalist design.

The full booklet can be viewed here.

Sticker design

The sticker designs were inspired by the existing designs seen in the Produce 101 shows and were replicated to resemble the same setting as the survival show. The branding of the logo was also applied to the design to further amplify the aesthetics of the show and give a sense of unity throughout all the deliverables. Additional stickers were designed for the ranks and positions that would be used to categorise participants into groups as they progressed further in the competition.

T-shirt design

The t-shirt design had the same branding of Reading 101. As it followed the same branding, the logo was placed at the front of the t-shirt, and for the back, a secondary logo was made to apply as well as include either the word ‘dance’ or ‘vocal’ to allow differentiating between which category the participants were competing in. On the day, this made it easier for people to navigate and ensured that the competition ran smoothly,

Social media

For the social media posts, the same layout as the booklet was used and. therefore, not much was different from the rest of the deliverables. the main social media platform used to promote the event was Instagram and thus, all the social media posts were done for Instagram. All the posts related to Reading 101 were scheduled for a week in advance to the event and were posted accordingly leading up to the day of the
event itself.
