IPDEOK Magazine
Masthead
Final masthead
The masthead was created with the intention of reflecting Korean culture within the magazine. The masthead was designed by combining a collection of Korean letters and reassembling the letters to replicate the romanised word for ‘입덕’ (ipdeok), which is also the masthead of the magazine. As this magazine celebrates Korean culture through music, it was important to highlight that through the masthead as well, as I wanted this to be eye catching to existing fans of Korean music and also appeal to new readers.
The chunky and boldness of the masthead also reflects the modernity of the magazine. The simplicity of the masthead allows it to be flexibly used in all aspects. Keeping the masthead a one tone colour allows for different colours to be used in each issue to match the cover. The masthead is also printed in spot UV to give it a modern and clean look.
The magazine name is inspired by the term ‘입덕’ (ipdeok),where ‘입’ (ip), means ‘to enter’, or in this context, ‘to get into a fandom’, and ‘덕’ (deok), is the Korean slang term for the word ‘otaku’, therefore ‘입덕’ (ipdeok), is the Korean slang term for the notion of becoming a fan of something.
IPDEOK showcases clean design, with bold typography and impressive production values, with printing using the finest quality paper and finishes. Each issue includes all things related to Korean music, ranging in various genres, to give our readers the latest and most accurate information to discover new artists. In each issue of IPDEOK, various music artists will be covered, with three featured artists. Each article has been designed to highlight the influence of the artists and show details. Each issue will also have a theme that will stay consistent throughout all the issues.

Typography
In IPDEOK, to keep the consistency of a modern look in our design, I combined two sans serif typefaces to create a bold and modern look, while equally balancing the clean aesthetic of the magazine with the use of white space and images. To allow easy reading, all articles in the magazine use Satoshi as the main typeface, with different weights used within to differentiate sections if needed. This grotesk style and geometrically designed sans serif typeface is inspired by modernism and Industrial-Era graphic and typographic design For all headings, Halyard Display has been applied, a sans serif that is beautifully robust and lively. Its extensive range of weights allow consistency and help with creating the bold, clean and impactful effect that the magazine aims to do, at any size.
The combination of both Satoshi and Halyard Display create an easy and comfortable reading experience, balancing the chunkiness of Halyard Display with Satoshi’s sleek geometric type. To showcase the personality of the magazine, for all headings in the magazine, some of the letters are replaced with the same letters from the masthead, to add an uniqueness to the magazine and convey the style of the magazine.
