(Re)Packaging for UNDERTALE
As part of a third year university project, I re-designed the packaging of the Nintendo Switch version of the game UNDERTALE. The aim was to create a collector’s edition version of the game including inclusions such as keychains, sticker sheets, postcards and a Nintendo Switch case skin, which would all be packed in a box.
UNDERTALE is a role-playing game developed by indie game developer Toby Fox, which follows the story of the protagonist, Frisk, who falls into a hole while being at the mountain and therefore, begins their journey in the ruins. The game follows their journey in discovering the different areas underground and progresses based on the protagonist’s actions and interactions with the supporting characters and monsters. The storyline of the game is very dependent on the player’s decisions and offers three different main paths: the Neutral Route, True Pacifist Route and Genocide Route.

Game case design
The design for the game case was inspired by the pixel art style of the game, specifically the heart symbol seen throughout the game. I decided on making the heart symbol the main focus of my design. The inspiration behind this design was taken from researching into how the fighting screen interacted. While confronting a monster, the box that surrounds the protagonist’s heart expands and shrinks, depending on the attacks and therefore I wanted to reflect that on the cover. Therefore, I overlapped various sizes of the box to show the interaction between all of them and also included the heart symbol in the centre of the design to emphasise its important and continuing motif throughout the game.
The final design is inspired by the fan’s interpretation of the different words mentioned throughout the game and making different versions of the heart symbol to symbolise each word. The design emphasised the red heart, the official heart symbol, by being placed in the middle. Each heart is placed within its own box to link back to the fighting screen in the game where the heart stays within the box. Each of those boxes were then placed at different sections of the cover to give the effect of them being placed randomly but still creating a clear hierarchy.
