Parasite film poster

Research

I chose this movie as I have previously watched it and the message of this movie was very fascinating to me. I started off my research by looking at images related to the movie. Starting off by searching up the meaning of the word ‘parasite’ itself. Through this, I found out that ‘parasite’ referred to ‘an organism that lives in or on an organism of another species (its host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the other’s expense.’ This information is something I kept in mind when brainstorming ideas for possible designs.

To further understand the process behind designing film posters, such as the use of colours, composition and legibility, I created mind maps on the role of film posters and how they are depicted differently from other genres of posters.

Final poster

For this project, I designed a poster based on one of the chosen films from the list that was provided. Through this project, I was able to see and experience the creative process of designing a film poster, as well as see the films from a designer’s perspective. This also challenged the way I looked at certain elements and the visuals of the films. Having also attended a lecture that explored disciplines such as psychology and semiotics to film theory, music, narrative, and philosophy of design really benefitted me when working on this project.

A closer look into
existing posters

To get a better understanding of the movie and its themes, I did a visual analysis of the existing promotional posters for the movie and annotated them.

Final Design

The final design involved making the peach the main element of the poster. The peach was one of the motifs in the symbols and one of the ‘weapons’ the Kim family use in their plan to overtake the Park family. In that sense, the outcomes of the peach were one of the most inhumane one, with it being the cherry on top in their plan, with the caretaker being fired. Therefore, I decided to use the peach as the main element in my final design as I thought it was perfect in terms of giving out the message of ‘appearances can be deceiving’.

More details on the making process of the poster can be found here.
